How can I avoid getting diarrhoea when travelling?
The best way to prevent diarrhoea while travelling is to be careful about the types of foods and drinks you consume. The general rule for eating during travelling is 'boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it' may be useful. Try to eat well-cooked food while it is hot and drink only drinks served in sealed bottles, such as bottled water, soda and beer. Hot beverages such as coffee and tea are also safe to drink (without added milk). Avoid ice and tap water that is not boiled. Washing your hands regularly, particularly after being in public places, can also reduce your chance of getting diarrhoea. Your doctor may prescribe anti-diarrhoea medications and/or antibiotics to prevent the development of traveller's diarrhoea. There are also vaccines available against some common causes of diarrhoea in travellers, such as hepatitis A and typhoid.
