Who can develop esophageal cancer?

Anyone can develop esophageal cancer. Risk factors that are known to increase the risk of developing this condition include: tobacco and alcohol consumption; Barrett's esophagus - this happens when recurring acid reflux from the stomach causes cells in the esophagus to change from squamous cells to columnar cells; obesity, particularly when fat is mainly in the abdominal area, and; nitrosamines, carcinogens present in foods such as salted vegetables and preserved fish.
