What is controlled comforting?

Controlled comforting is a technique that can help a baby learn to settle and go to sleep without being held and comforted all the time. It involves settling the baby and placing them in their cot while they are still awake. If the baby becomes distressed, they are first given the chance to soothe themselves before the carer comes back to comfort them.
