How are hemorrhoids treated?

In most cases, you can control hemorrhoids with lifestyle and dietary changes, such as avoiding constipation by eating enough fiber and drinking plenty of water. High-fiber foods include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Alternatively, consider using a fiber supplement. Avoid straining or sitting for prolonged periods of time and go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need to. The pain and itchiness of hemorrhoids can be relieved by taking warm baths, using soft toilet paper and applying hemorrhoid creams. If hemorrhoids continue to be a persistent problem, procedures such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy and surgery to remove hemorrhoids (hemorrhoidectomy) may be offered.
