What increases the chances of developing hearing loss?

The following can increase the chance of developing hearing loss: 1) Congenital infections such as HIV, toxoplasmosis, syphilis, varicella, rubella, cytomegalovirus or herpes. 2) Hyperbilirubinemia (too much bilirubin in the blood). 3) Admission to newborn intensive care unit. 4) Meningitis orencephalitis. 5) Aminoglycoside antibiotic therapy for more than three days. 6) Close family history (a parent or sibling) of congenital hearing impairment. 7) Congenital abnormality of the head or neck. 8) Low birth weight (less than 1500 grams). 9) The need for major resuscitation at birth.
