What causes esophageal cancer?

The cause of esophageal cancer, as with other cancers, is damage to cellular DNA. The exact cause of esophageal cancers is not well known. However, risk factors that are known to increase the risk of developing this condition include: tobacco and alcohol consumption; Barrett's esophagus - this happens when recurring acid reflux from the stomach causes cells in the esophagus to change from squamous cells to columnar cells; obesity, particularly when fat is mainly in the abdominal area, and; nitrosamines, carcinogens present in foods such as salted vegetables and preserved fish.
