What are FODMAPs?

FODMAPs are specific, short-chain carbohydrate chains found in various foods. They can cause irritable bowel syndrome symptoms including bloating, abdominal pain and flatulence, as they are poorly absorbed by the gut and instead are rapidly fermented by bacteria in the large intestine. FODMAPs also draw extra water into the large intestine, leading to diarrhea.
