How is back pain treated?
Treatment of back pain will vary depending on what is causing the pain, how frequently it occurs and how severe it is. An acute case of back pain may first be treated with rest, relative rest ('easing up'), or modified activities for a few days. Medications may be used to treat the pain and swelling. As the back pain eases and mobility is restored, a back education program may be started, along with appropriate exercise and a physiotherapy treatment plan. The goal of treatment is to restore proper function and strengthen the back, and prevent the injury from recurring.
