How are head lice diagnosed?

Head lice are diagnosed with a scalp examination for the lice or their eggs (nits), which are usually laid and attached to hair within 1.5cm of the scalp. You can also check by applying hair conditioner, which stuns the lice and stops them moving around, then combing the hair in sections with a fine-toothed comb. Wiping the conditioner from the comb onto tissue or paper towel can allow you to assess if lice and/or nits are present.
